Men’s Basketball Outlasted by Cornell in Holiday Hoopla

Score: UAlbany 75, Cornell 83

Location: Broadview Center | Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (4-10, 0-0 America East), Cornell (6-5, 0-0 Ivy)

Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team came up short in its annual Holiday Hoopla contest, falling to Cornell at home.

Coach Killings: "It was really a tale of two halves. I thought we played well in the first half and went into the locker room up 34–29. Cornell is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country. They change defenses and play at a fast pace, and I thought we executed well early. In the second half, they made us pay a few times, and over the last six minutes, we were worn down. Their pace and constant changes create fatigue, and they beat us at their game down the stretch. We didn't play a complete game."

Key Stats:
  • Amir Lindsey led UAlbany with 23 points, going 10-for-17 from the field (3-for-7 from three) and adding four assists.
  • Jaden Kempson scored 18 points on 7-for-16 shooting (2-for-5 from three) with one steal and one block.
  • Isaac Abidde added 13 points, shooting 4-for-7 (2-for-4 from three) and pulling down 10 rebounds.
  • Okechukwu Okeke finished with eight points, six rebounds, and five blocks.
  • UAlbany shot 50.0 percent from the field (30-for-60), 45.5 percent from three (10-for-22), and 71.4 percent at the free-throw line (5-for-7).
  • Cornell shot 47.5 percent from the field (28-for-59), 51.5 percent from three (17-for-33), and 71.4 percent at the line (10-for-14).

How it Happened:
  • Cornell opened the game on a 9–8 run, hitting three early three-pointers, while Jaden Kempson and Amir Lindsey scored four points apiece for UAlbany.
  • After Cornell took a 17–16 lead, the Great Danes responded by outscoring the Big Red 15–8 to build a 31–25 advantage. Lindsey knocked down two triples during the stretch, and Okechukwu Okeke punctuated the run with a powerful dunk as just over three minutes remained in the first half.
  • A jumper from Kempson and a free throw from Isaac Abidde closed the half, sending UAlbany into the locker room with a 34–29 lead.
  • The Great Danes opened the second half on an 8–3 run to claim their first double-digit lead of the game, 42–32, highlighted by three-pointers from Zacharie Matulu and Kempson.
  • Cornell answered by hitting seven of its next nine field goals from beyond the arc, using a 25–12 run to regain the lead at 57–54 with 10 minutes remaining.
  • Trailing 67–59 with 7:06 to play, a step-back three from Kempson sparked a 7–0 UAlbany run, trimming the deficit to one, 67–66, with 4:48 left.
  • The Great Danes pulled within four at 72–68, but Cornell closed the game by outscoring UAlbany 11–7 down the stretch to secure the 83–75 victory.
