Volleyball Battles in Five-Set Road Thriller at NJIT

SCORE: NJIT 3, UAlbany 2 (22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-12)

RECORD: UAlbany 12-11, 5-4 America East | NJIT 5-20, 1-8 America East

SHORT STORY: UAlbany volleyball raced out to a two-set lead behind a balanced offense and strong net defense before NJIT mounted a comeback to take the match in five on Sunday afternoon.

KEY STATS

  • Graduate setter Maria Olga Siapani tallied 42 assists, 17 digs, and added 5 kills.

  • Senior outside hitter Anna Myhal led all players with 14 kills, adding 11 digs and 1 ace.

  • Graduate outside hitter Shynelle Woroniuk finished with 12 kills, 12 digs, and 5 blocks.

  • Redshirt-junior middle blocker Gabriella Karman hit .643 with 10 kills, 8 blocks, and 15 points.

  • Senior middle blocker Tori Wilson hit .227 with 10 kills and 3 blocks.

  • Sophomore defensive specialist Kasia Barletta anchored the back row with 18 digs and 1 ace.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UAlbany jumped out to an early lead in the first set and stayed steady behind kills from Myhal and Wilson.

  • Karman's presence at the net gave UAlbany the edge and Harris closed it out 25-22.

  • The Great Danes rolled in the second set behind a 7-1 run with Barletta on the line.

  • Siapani spread the ball across the court and Karman added two key blocks as UAlbany took it 25-16.

  • NJIT answered in the third and built a 13-7 lead after several extended rallies.

  • UAlbany cut it to three behind back-to-back swings from Myhal but the Highlanders held on 25-18.

  • The fourth set stayed tight until 15-all when NJIT used a short scoring run to pull ahead.

  • Karman blocked a late swing to extend the frame but NJIT forced a fifth with a 25-18 win.

  • UAlbany led 5-3 early in the fifth behind Wilson's block and a quick dump from Siapani.

  • NJIT rallied and after the score was tied at 11, the Highlanders finished the match 15-12.

NEXT: UAlbany returns home to face Bryant on Friday, Nov. 14, for senior night in the last regular season match of the season.
