SHORT STORY: The Great Danes played a very close game until the final minutes of the contest when Rhode Island took a 64-52 win, Saturday evening.
KEY STATS
- Graduate student Júlia Palomo Vicente (11) and junior Lara Langerman (10) led the team in scoring.
- Sophomore Martina Borrellas earned a team-high six rebounds.
- Freshman Amaya Stewart was the team's main feeder with four assists. Langermann was close behind with three.
- As a team, the Great Danes shot 50% from behind the arc with a second-half .522 field goal percentage (.438 for the game).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rhode Island won the jump ball but UAlbany's freshman Anaïs Levasseur tallied the first points of the contest with a three-pointer following a Gabriela Falcão steal.
- After going back-and-forth with a couple of early ties, a second-chance layup from Martina Borrellas gave the Great Danes their next lead with 2:44 remaining in the first.
- Rhode Island closed the first quarter with a 5-0 run for the 15-11 lead.
- The Rams continued what proved to be 11 unanswered points and held UAlbany scoreless through the first three minutes of the second.
- The Great Danes responded with a 10-2 scoring run to make it a 23-21 game with just over three minutes left in the first half.
- Although UAlbany production from deep increased, Rhode Island held on for a one-possession advantage, 26-23, into halftime.
- At the half, the Great Danes had a 60% accuracy at the three-point arc with baskets from Levausser, Júlia Palomo Vicente, and Lara Langermann.
- UAlbany came out of the break with a fire and scored seven consecutive points in just under two minutes to force a Rhode Island timeout.
- Despite the early strength, the Great Danes scored just three additional field goals and the Rams worked for the 40-36 advantage headed into the final quarter.
- A combined 18 points with just two missed baskets (one each) were scored in the first five minutes.
- Senior Gabriela Falcão scored the only basket from 6:11 to 2:42 to make it a four-point game.
- In the final minutes of the game, the Great Danes attempted to take the lead with three-pointers from sophomore Delanie Hill and Palomo Vicente but the Rams ran away with the score and earned the double-digit win.
NEXT: The Great Danes return home to host Siena for the annual Albany Cup at Broadview Center on Wednesday (Nov. 19).
