SHORT STORY: The UAlbany field hockey team fought a 60-minute battle against #16 Yale but ultimately fell in the one-goal decision, Sunday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "I am proud of our effort - particularly in the last three quarters. I thought we played really well but we did have to get down a couple of goals to really wake up. I love how we competed against a very good Yale team - we had chances late in the game. For the weekend [as a whole], the way we played will provide good momentum and growth going into next weekend."
KEY STATS
- Sophomore Tessa Overgoor scored the lone UAlbany goal, her fifth of the year.
- Junior Mara Küskes led the team with five shots.
- As a team, Yale outshot UAlbany, 15-14, but the Great Danes landed 10 on goal compared to the Bulldogs' nine and held the advantage in penalty corners, 11-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yale started the scoring midway through the first quarter to take a 1-0 first-quarter lead.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead early in the second quarter and held on to the 2-0 lead through the remainder of the first half.
- Coming out of the break strong, the Great Danes scored within 30 seconds of the beginning of the third quarter. Grabbing a rebounded shot from graduate student Olivia Bell, Tessa Overgoor dumped the ball past the goalie for the score.
- Both teams had strong chances on goal, including a solid one-on-one situation for both Yale and UAlbany, in the fourth quarter.
- Five minutes into the final quarter, the Bulldogs' Poppy Beales landed a breakaway and earned a one-on-one with the UAlbany goalie. Fifth year Emma Peeters stopped the initial shot but it got past her and slowly rolled towards the goal line until Mara Küskes stopped the ball and dribbled it out of the circle.
- About two minutes later, junior Emma Staron goes against the Bulldog goalie one-on-one and takes her shot but the strong attempt is saved by Yale.
- The Great Danes pulled the goalie to play with an extra field player with about four minutes remaining in the game. The final minutes saw three corners and three shots, including two on goal, for UAlbany but it wasn't enough and the Bulldogs won the contest, 2-1.
NEXT: The Great Danes are prepared for one final regular-season weekend at home. They will host New Hampshire for their last home conference matchup on Friday (Oct. 24) before welcoming Stonehill for Senior Day on Sunday (Oct. 26).
