How it Happened
- The University at Albany men's soccer team hosted its second home game in a row Friday night, renewing a rivalry with Niagara that had laid dormant since the 2000 season. UAlbany had previously won their home opener over Villanova by a score of 2-0.
- In the second minute, Mohamed Soumah drew a foul in the Niagara box, and UAlbany was awarded a penalty kick. Mamadi Jiana stepped up for the attempt and converted to give the Great Danes an early 1-0 lead.
- In the 36th minute, Timo Jansen settled the ball deep in the top right corner of the Niagara territory. He played the ball back to Lovro Horvat, who served into the Niagara box.  Ander Castillo met the serve with his head and beat Niagara keeper Jamie Barry to put UAlbany up 2-0.
- UAlbany nearly scored again in the 43rd minute, when Jeff Thielmann pushed a draw to Castillo towards the left post, but Castillo's point-blank shot was met by Barry with a save deflected into a UAlbany corner kick.
- Shortly after halftime, in the 50th minute, Horvat broke down the right side and fired a shot cross field. His effort just narrowly missed the mark, bouncing off the far post.
- UAlbany took back-to-back shots in the 58th minute, but both Alex Pechacek's and Soumah's efforts were blocked by Niagara defenders.
- Jiana created yet another scoring opportunity in the 61st minute, beating his defender on the left side, but his shot, like Horvat's earlier, also found the post.
- UAlbany went on to win the game by the same score, 2-0. The Great Danes outshot Niagara by a total of 14-2, and the defense did not allow a shot in the second half. In goal, Shafique Wilson earned his 11th shutout and was untested on the evening.
Next: UAlbany visits #1 and defending national champion Syracuse on September 4.
