Head Coach Trevor Gorman: "We competed really well tonight.  Syracuse is a top-level team that forces you to play at that same level.  Our guys got better from this game and showed what they're capable of.  We were disappointed to concede that set piece goal but created some clear cut chances ourselves.  On a different day we get something from that game.  All matches give you the chance to grow and improve, and that's what we'll look to do."

How it Happened
  • After playing two games at home and winning in consecutive shutouts, the University at Albany men's soccer program hit the road for a showdown at #1 and defending national champion Syracuse.  The Orange were unbeaten on the season, 2-0-1, having most recently played #20 Penn State to a 1-1 draw on the road.
  • UAlbany was 1-0-1 against Syracuse since upsetting the #3 Orange 2-1 in the 2016 season.  Monday's game between the teams was the first in Syracuse since the 2015 season, a 2-1 victory for the Orange.
  • Both teams opened the game playing high pressure, where each was called offsides twice in the first 11 minutes.  Syracuse took its first shot attempt in the eighth minute, and the Orange didn't test UAlbany goalkeeper Shafique Wilson until the 16th minute when Wilson made a save in the low corner.  Syracuse's third shot of the game, in the 18th minute, hit the crossbar.
  • Lucas Watt recorded UAlbany's first shot of the game, in the 27th minute, forcing Syracuse goalkeeper Jahiem Wickham to make a low save.
  • Shortly after halftime, in the 51st minute, Syracuse's offense found a gap in the UAlbany defense on a set piece to score the first goal of the game, Gabriel Mikina from Jeorgio Kocevski.
  • UAlbany earned its first corner kick of the night in the 84th minute, and its second in the 90th with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Syracuse held on to win the game by the same score, 1-0.  The Orange outshot the Great Danes 14-5 overall, but only managed to take three of their 14 shots on target.  Syracuse drew seven total corner kicks in the game, to UAlbany's two.
Next: UAlbany hosts Marist on September 8.
