Â
"We are excited to restart our Hall of Fame induction ceremonies this fall," said UAlbany Director of Athletics Mark Benson. "These inductees have competed at the highest level and embody the best characteristics of what it means to be a Great Dane student-athlete. We look forward to honoring the Class of 2023 for their contributions to the rich history of UAlbany Athletics."
Â
One of two inductees in the Class of 2023 representing UAlbany's Division III era,
Wayne Anderson earned All-America honors as a member of the Great Danes football program from 1983-86. At the time of his enshrinement, Anderson, who split time as a safety and a returner, still holds the program's single-season and career records for interceptions, more than 30 years after earning his degree.
Â
Among the most decorated track & field athletes in program history,
Joe Greene was the first Great Dane in history to break the 50-second barrier in the 400m hurdles. The three-time All-American placed fourth at NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in his signature event in 2007 and 2009, the highest-ever finish for a UAlbany competitor. Greene, who returned to UAlbany to earn his degree in 2021 after embarking on a career at the professional level, still holds eight program records that have stood since his final year in uniform in 2009.
Â
Announcing her presence immediately as a freshman,
Corrine McConville led the America East in shots taken during her first year. The four-year starter concluded her career ranked second in the field hockey program's Division I era with 101 total points. Like Greene, McConville earned her degree after finishing her playing career, last competing in 2013 and earning her degree in 2015.
Â
The first Tewaaraton Award finalist in UAlbany history,
Frank Resetarits was a leader on the men's lacrosse team during the program's first series of appearances in the Division I NCAA Tournament that broke the Great Danes into the national stage, securing the program's first NCAA Tournament victory in 2007. The 2007 America East Player of the Year won three conference titles and was the first member of the men's program to earn All-America First Team accolades.
Â
Led by legendary program founder and UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2010 member Robert Keith "R.K." Munsey, the
1973 Men's Cross Country Team cemented its place in history by placing second at the NCAA Division III National Championships. James Shrader, team co-captain and UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1988 member, earned individual All-America honors, guiding the team to a record of 10-3, with the three losses coming at the hands of Division I opponents. The 1973 roster featured as members Chris Burns, Carlo Cherubino (UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1987), Nick DeMarco, Herb Hasan, John Koch, Vincent Reda (UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1989), William Sorel, and Curt Woodcock.
Â
2023 marks the first induction class since 2019. The annual enshrinement did not take place the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the UAlbany Athletics Selection Committee used the time to reformat and modernize the nomination and selection process. In the first year under this new process, the Committee enshrined the new class from a combined 31 individual and team nominations.
Â
Under the guidelines within the UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame Constitution, eligibility for an individual nominee must have graduated from the University and be five years removed from the conclusion of their collegiate careers.  Prospective coach and administrator nominees gain eligibility five years following the date of their last employment in the Department of Athletics. Team eligibility begins upon the conclusion of a 10-year waiting period following the conclusion of the season under consideration. Finally, honorary and posthumous candidates are not subject to a waiting period and may be nominated at any time. Active nominations will remain under consideration for three years, after which point, if they have not been enshrined, they must be renominated.
Â
Established in 1986, the Class of 2023 is the 35th to be inducted into the UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame, which has now enshrined a total of 156 members.
