SHORT STORY: The Great Danes nearly came back from a three-goal deficit but it was New Hampshire winning the America East semifinal, Tuesday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Incredible game today. I am so proud of our team and how we battled back in the second half. We got that fourth goal and with a lot of momentum nearly tied it up on several occasions. We had such a great team to be around this year. I know they are all incredibly disappointed in the outcome today but will hold their head up high."

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Jette Kurz and sophomore Tessa Overgoor each totaled two goals and one assist to lead the team.
  • Freshman Lillian Willis added an assist.
  • New Hampshire outshot UAlbany, 19-16, but the Great Danes held the advantage with 10 shots on goal to the Wildcats' nine.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Hampshire opened the scoring in just the sixth minute of the contest.
  • Just over three minutes later, Jette Kurz scored her first goal of the game with a diving shot to sneak it past the Wildcat goalie. Lillian Willis tapped the ball into the circle where it was just out of reach from Kurz' stick. The rookie went for the reverse shot with a dive towards the ground and sent the ball into the board.
  • Wildcat Nicole Poulakis scored twice before the end of the first quarter to make it an early 3-1 lead for UNH.
  • Tessa Overgoor scored the first of what proved to be a three-goal second quarter. Receiving a 15-yard pass from Kurz, Overgoor two-touched the ball into the opposite corner from 10 yards out for the score.
  • New Hampshire followed up with two additional goals in the first half.
  • Though the score read 5-2 at halftime, the game was closer than the score represented as nearly all other statistics read the same and the Great Danes had several close scoring opportunities.
  • UAlbany came out of the break renewed on defense and ended up holding the Wildcats to just one goal in the second half.
  • Nearly 10 minutes into the third quarter, Kurz came running into the circle having received a pass from Overgoor. Drawing the goalie off her angle, the rookie scored her second goal of the game, and sixth of the two-game postseason.
  • Overgoor added a fourth, and what proved to be the final, UAlbany goal three minutes later catching the rebound of a penalty corner shot.
  • Throughout the final quarter, the Great Danes put together several close calls for chances to tie the score but were unable to finish and earn their fifth goal.
  • With about four minutes remaining, UAlbany goalie Emma Peeters came to the sideline for an extra field player but it still was not enough.
  • Peeters held on with a penalty stroke save in the 58th minute but the Wildcats scored an empty net goal with 20 seconds remaining to secure the 6-4 win.
