GREENWOOD, Ind. – Seven members of the University at Albany track & field program, two men and five women, have been named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators, formerly CoSIDA.
 
Dean Athanailos, a distance runner from Floral Park, N.Y., earned a 3.98 GPA studying Business with a minor in Economics.  A four-time America East All-Academic selection, Athanailos recorded season-best times of 1:56.98 in the men's 800m and 3:59.98 in the men's 1,500m
 
Shannon Bailey, a high jumper from Meadowbrook Estate, Jamaica, earned a 3.65 GPA studying Human Biology with a minor in Psychology.  A one-time America East All-Academic selection, Bailey placed third at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships in the women's high jump and ranked second in the conference with a season-best of 5-07.00.
 
Rebeca Valerie Barrientos Alpha, a jumper from San Salvador, El Salvador, earned a 3.75 GPA studying Business with a minor in Art.  Barrientos Alpha placed third in the women's triple jump at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships in the women's triple jump and ranked sixth in the conference in the women's long jump.
 
Maria Grijalva, a distance runner from the Bronx, N.Y., earned a 4.00 GPA pursuing a graduate degree in Social Welfare.  During the outdoor season, Grijalva set personal bests in both the women's 1,500m and 5,000m.
 
Noreen Guilfoyle, a distance runner from Mount Sinai, N.Y., earned a 4.00 GPA pursuing a graduate degree in Public Health.  Guilfoyle just earned her second career America East All-Academic selection, and placed fourth in the women's 10,000m at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships.
 
Marcus McFadden, a jumper from Rochester, N.Y., earned a 3.53 GPA studying Business.  McFadden placed fifth in the men's long jump at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships and set a season-best of 23-05.50, contributing to the Great Danes' men's long jump squad that ranked seventh in the country.
 
Leann Nicholas, a jumper from Farmingdale, N.Y., earned a 3.96 GPA studying Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Spanish.  Nicholas has been named America East All-Academic twice, and led both the America East Conference and Northeast Region in the women's triple jump this season after setting a new UAlbany program and America East Championship meet record of43-04.50.
 
The 2022-23 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes track & field/cross country honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 28 (women) and June 29 (men).
