Men’s Basketball Adds Zach Matulu as Preferred Walk-On

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's basketball team has announced that Zach Matulu, a 6-4 guard, will join the Great Danes in 2023-24 as a preferred walk-on. Matulu is a Capital Region product, having played high school basketball for Shaker in Latham.

"Today is a great day to be a Great Dane," said Head Coach Dwayne Killings. "Zach joining our program as a walk on is tremendous for our program as we add a high-character person whose family has overcome the odds to achieve success academically and athletically. Our community should celebrate all that Zach has become and we are thrilled to welcome yet another future leader that was raised within the Capital Region community. We are overjoyed to welcome the Matulus to our family."

Matulu served as a captain of the Shaker basketball team, proving to be one of the best players in the Capital Region over his high school career. He has been described as hard working, intelligent, committed, and a leader by the Shaker coaching staff.

"I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity that God gave me," said Matulu. "I can't wait to get in the gym and work towards a great season with the Great Danes."

Coach Dwayne Killings has previously stated the importance of keeping local talent in the Capital Region. Matulu will join a Great Dane squad that already features Hudson Falls native Jonathan Beagle, the 2022-23 America East Rookie of the Year, and Amsterdam native Marcus Jackson.
