Leann Nicholas has been named SUNY Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's indoor track & field.

The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year. Nominating information includes cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors.

Nicholas, a jumper from Farmingdale, N.Y., earned a 3.96 GPA studying Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Spanish. Nicholas won the women's triple jump at the 2023 America East Championships, one of her three individual victories in the event during the indoor season. She set personal bests this season in both the long jump, 17-11.75, and the triple jump, 43-03.25, the latter of which also led all performers in the Northeast region, and ranked third in program history.

The Scholar Athletes of the Year in each sport will be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July.

More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards.
