BOSTON - University at Albany field hockey midfielder
Alison Smisdom earned America East Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, the league announced Thursday.
Smisdom posts a 3.65 GPA through three semesters with a major in business administration. This honor comes off a list of postseason accolades for the sophomore, including but not limited to SUNY Scholar-Athlete of the Year and NFHCA First Team All-America.
On the field, the Belgium native was named NFHCA Northeast Player of the Year after finishing the season in the top-15 of the nation in points per game and goals per game. Leading her team to a shootout victory in the America East Championship, Smisdom totaled a team-high 39 points, 15 goals, and four game-winning goals, each of which was good for third in the conference.
Smisdom's academic award is the latest in a line of awards she has earned since arriving on campus. The 2022 America East Midfielder of the Year and 2021 America East Rookie of the Year is a two-time America East First Team All-Conference, NFHCA First Team All-Northeast Region, and America East All-Tournament honoree. In addition to her first NFHCA National Academic Squad mention in 2022, she was named to the America East All-Academic Team in her first year eligible.
Smisdom is the sixth Great Dane to be named the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She joins Arlette Westdorp (2006), Kristi Troch (2010), Daphne Voormolen (2013), Paula Heuser (2014-16), and Melissa Nealon (2018) as the other UAlbany field hockey student-athletes to win the award.
