Rowe Leads as Volleyball Battles

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes and the Chanticleers battled back and forth but it was Coastal Carolina taking the win, Friday evening.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "The Great Danes really battled tonight and we just came up a couple of breaks short. Hannah Rowe played exceptionally well and I'm proud of how she's taken to the right side. The great thing about these tournaments is that we get to get right back on the court tomorrow."
 
KEY STATS
  • Junior Hannah Rowe tallied a career-high 26 kills to lead the team.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken notched a team-high 24 digs while junior Kaleigh Fitzgerald and senior Malea Stanton followed with 13 and 12, respectively.
  • Stanton served as the team's setter, collecting 48 assists.
  • Junior Naliah Grannell totaled five blocks to lead the team on the net.
  • Fitzgerald owned a team-high two service aces. Stanton and freshman Anna Myhal followed with one each.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes scored the first point and worked to add to their lead, eventually tallying a 9-4 advantage.
  • Coastal Carolina worked to close the point gap but UAlbany would not let that happen, owning a 15-10 lead.
  • After tying the score at 18, the Chanticleers gained a 22-20 lead but the Great Danes notched five-straight points, including a set-ending service ace from Kaleigh Fitzgerald, to take the set, 25-22.
  • The second set saw Coastal Carolina take an early 4-2 lead before sharing the lead back-and-forth with UAlbany.
  • Down by one, the Chanticleers compiled a 6-0 scoring run to take a 12-7 lead.
  • The Great Danes totaled four unanswered points late in the second set but it wasn't enough as Coastal Carolina took the set, 25-20.
  • UAlbany started the third set with a fire, taking the first four points unanswered.
  • Despite the Great Danes holding the lead for the majority of the early set, the Chanticleers tallied five unanswered points to be the first to 15.
  • The late half of the third set was very close. Seeing nine ties past 15-15, UAlbany notched two points in a row to take the set, 26-24.
  • The back-and-forth point scoring continued into the fourth set until Coastal Carolina scored three straight points to gain a 10-7 lead.
  • UAlbany and Coastal Carolina continued to trade points in the fourth set but the Great Danes were unable to overcome a second 3-0 scoring run and the Chanticleers once again tied the match, 2-2, with a 25-23 set win.
  • In the beginning of the fifth set, Coastal Carolina tallied the first multi-point lead, 5-3.
  • The Chanticleers continued with a multi-point lead but the Great Danes worked to tie the score at 13 with a 4-1 scoring run.
  • Coastal Carolina closed the set, and the match, with two final points to win.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will continue the Penn State Classic with two matches tomorrow, September 17.
