Blöchliger Leads as Women's Golf Claims Runner-Up Position at MAAC Championships

FINISH: 2nd - 908 (+44) - out of nine teams

LOCATION: Disney's Magnolia Course - Lake Buena Vista, Florida

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes completed the season at the MAAC Championships with a second-place finish.

COACH COLLEEN CASHMAN:
"I couldn't be more proud of this team and the grit they possessed this week. We have endured a lot of adversity in the past month and they really banded together and tried their hardest. Considering we arrived in Florida and played the practice round with just four players while leaving the other two in the hotel sick, we knew it was going to be a battle this weekend. To be leading after not just the first but also the second round was an awesome feeling. Sometimes, it is harder to win with the lead in golf then it is to come from behind and play with less pressure.

"Unfortunately, we just couldn't close the door in the final round. It was back and forth all day on the scoreboard, but we just couldn't make enough birdies and pars to hold steady. They all tried their hardest and put up a great fight. Placing three players on the All-MAAC Team was a huge accomplishment and watching Claudia [Blöchliger] rise to the occasion and win Freshman of the Year and be the leader of the entire event for two rounds was special. This team doesn't have anything to hang their heads about. They gave it their all and I'm very proud of everything they have accomplished this tournament and this year. And a special thank you to Madison [Walker] and Pasqualina [Tartaglione] for taking the reins this entire season and helping to guide these players to the end. It was almost a Cinderella story! That would have been pretty cool but I'm still very proud of all of them!"

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • During the three-day, three-round competition, the Great Danes led the way through two rounds of play.
  • UAlbany scored a 295 to open the tournament. The team's first-round score proved to be the lowest round score a team would see throughout the tournament.
  • Taking first place after one round of play, freshman Claudia Blöchliger led the team with a -3.
  • Following Blöchliger was sophomore Mariel Tee in seventh place with a +2 and senior Madison Walker in ninth place with a +3
  • The Great Danes once again tallied the lowest team score of the day (303) for the second round of competition to hold their first-place spot.
  • Tee golfed the lowest score of day two, an even par (72), to move up to third place.
  • Tallying a +3, Blöchliger remained in first place with an even par from 36 holes.
  • On day three, UAlbany golfed a 310 to follow Quinnipiac's sub-300 score. The Bobcats' score was good enough to place them in first place for the championship title.
  • After round three, Blöchliger finished third and Tee finished fourth individually.
  • Senior Madison Walker went 75-79-77 on the par-72 course to finish 10th individually.
  • Throughout the competition, Blöchliger led with 11 birdies.
