Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team opened conference play with a 2-1 victory over the UMBC Retrievers on Friday afternoon.
Ray Weber pitched six scoreless innings while
Cregg Scherrer struck out five in three innings of relief work. Associate Head Coach
Jeff Kaier filled in as the team's skipper for the game, helping lead the Great Danes to victory with Head Coach
Jon Mueller out due to personal reasons.

Cregg Scherrer was great out of the bullpen. We defended at a high level and were able to do just enough offensively."

- The UAlbany pitching staff dominated the day, with Weber tossing six scoreless and Scherrer closing the game out.
- Will Feil and Will Binder both recorded multiple hits for UAlbany. Feil went 2-3, also collecting the lone RBI for the Great Danes on a sac fly. Binder went 2-4.
- Johnny Marti (1-4), Brad Malm (1-4) and Chris Fisher (1-1) had the remaining hits for the Great Danes. Malm picked up a double and crossed home plate once, scoring on an UMBC error.
- Carson Dunkel went 0-2 but scored a run and had two walks
- UAlbany left seven runners on base, UMBC left eight.
- Great Dane batters struck out seven times, whereas the Retrievers struck out five times.
How it Happened:
- Ray Weber started on the mound for the Great Danes, Luke Johnson started for the Retrievers.
- The Great Danes got on the board first in the top of the sixth. Carson Dunkel crossed home on a sac fly by Will Feil. Dunkel previously walked and advanced to third on an error.
- Evan Selmer replaced Johnson on the mound for UMBC to start the seventh.
- Cregg Scherrer entered the game for UAlbany in the bottom of the seventh.
- The Retrievers tied the game at one in the same inning when Drew Roberts singled to right field, scoring pinch runner Jayden Shertel.
- In the top of the eighth, Brad Malm doubled to left field and later crossed home on an error to make it 2-1 in favor of the Great Danes.
