Baseball Takes Game Two Against UMBC

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team collected its second win of the weekend over UMBC, taking down the Retrievers 11-9. In a close game, the Great Danes drove in seven runs in the eighth inning to secure their second America East victory in just as many tries. Will Binder picked up a team-high four RBIs.

  • UAlbany pitchers
  • UAlbany pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
  • Will Binder had the most hits for UAlbany, going 3-4 and collecting a team-high four RBIs. He also scored one run and walked once.
  • Johnny Marti (2-5) and Michael Whalen (2-3) both had two hits, including one double each. Marti scored once, whereas Whalen crossed home twice and also picked up an RBI.
  • Brad Malm (1-3), Jason Bottari (1-4), Will Feil (1-4), Carson Dunkel (1-5), and Josh Salandy (1-3) had the remaining hits for the Great Danes. Malm hit his 11th home run of the season, collecting one RBI. Feil homered for the fourth time this year while also recording two RBIs. Bottari had an RBI as well.

How it Happened:
  • Anthony Germinero started on the mound for the Great Danes, Jayden Shertel started for the Retrievers.
  • UMBC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Tony Krueger singled to center, scoring Logan Doran, and Drew Roberts singled to right to score Justin Taylor.
  • Will Feil hit a leadoff home run to start the fourth, cutting UMBC's lead in half.
  • Will Binder made it 3-2 in the same inning with a single to left, scoring Carson Dunkel, who previously singled to right, and Michael Whalen, who doubled to center.
  • Colton Bare replaced Shertel midway through the fourth.
  • UMBC took back its lead in the bottom of the fourth when Krueger hit a three-run home run, scoring Taylor and Doran.
  • Joe Pucek took the mound for the Retrievers midway through the fifth.
  • UMBC added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when Krueger walked with the bases loaded to score Ian Diaz, making it 3-6.
  • Owen Hamilton entered the game for UMBC midway through the sixth.
  • UAlbany got two runs back in the top of the eighth. John Daly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Binder, and Jason Bottari made it a one-run ballgame with a single to right, scoring Johnny Marti.
  • Michael Schwartz came in to take the mound for the Retrievers midway through the eighth.
  • The scoring didn't stop though. Feil tied the game at six as he reached first on a fielder's choice, scoring Brad Malm. Bottari scored on a walk by Whalen with the bases loaded, giving the Great Danes a 7-6 advantage. The following at-bat, Feil crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make it 8-6. Finally, Binder hit another two-run single to center, scoring Whalen and Dunkel, making it 10-6.
  • Adam Schwartz replaced Michael Schwartz on the mound for UMBC, still in the top of the eighth.
  • Marshall Winn came into the game for UAlbany to start the bottom of the eighth.
  • Rob Manetta replaced Winn halfway through the eighth.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Taylor and Krueger scored for UMBC off a triple by Roberts. The next at-bat, Christian Easley made it a one-run game with a sac fly, scoring Roberts.
  • Malm hit his 11th home run of the season in the top of the final inning, making it 11-9 and securing the win for UAlbany.
