Men’s Hoops Battles Providence on National Television

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's basketball travels to take on Big East opponent Providence in a Saturday afternoon showdown. The game will be broadcast nationally on FS1, with tip scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Fans in the Capital Region can also tune to ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team to hear Rodger Wyland and Michael Johnson Jr. on the call.

Leading the Pack
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game. Drumgoole Jr. is averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assist while shooting 38.8% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. He leads the team in shooting from three-point territory, sinking 27 longballs on 69 attempts.
  • Freshman Jonathan Beagle has been a force for the Great Danes. The big man, listed at 6-10, sits second on the team in scoring (10.6 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg). The rebounding mark sets him in fourth place among the entire America East Conference. The rookie is efficient in his shooting, hitting at a clip of 51.3% from the field. He has twice been named the conference's Rookie of the Week.
  • Da'Kquan Davis is one of just four players in the conference to record a 30-point outing, sinking 32 against A-10 foe Saint Joseph's on Nov. 17. He is averaging 8.9 ppg but hasn't scored more than six in his last four games. He leads the team with 21 assists and in minutes played with 294.
  • Aaron Reddish has missed two games this year due to illness but has been a strong defender and scorer when on the court. He is averaging 9.5 per game and is shooting 41.4% from three-point range. He has hit at least two three-pointers in half of the games he has played this year and has attempted at least one long ball in every game.
  • The Great Danes are averaging 68.2 ppg while holding opponents to 75.0 points. The team is shooting 42.1% from the field, 35.1% from three, and 65.6% from the charity stripe.
  • In 10 games this season, the Great Danes have rolled out seven different starting lineups.
 
Last Time Out
The UAlbany men's basketball team fell to UMass on Monday night, 87-73. The Great Danes struggled in the first half, committing 10 turnovers and shooting just 25% from the field. The second half was a different story, with UAlbany shooting above 50% and outscoring UMass 52-41. Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all players with 20 points.
  • The Great Danes rolled out a new starting lineup against the Minutemen. Starting for UAlbany was Gerald Drumgoole Jr., Tairi Ketner, Will Amica, Sarju Patel, and Trey Hutcheson.
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all scorers with 20 points. He went 6-14 from the field and 6-13 from beyond the arc. He led the team with five assists and 33 minutes played, while also collecting six rebounds.
  • Jonathan Beagle led the team in rebounds with eight. The freshman finished with 11 points, going 5-7 from the charity stripe.
  • Trey Hutcheson and Malik Edmead both finished with nine points each.
  • UAlbany shot 39.7% (25-63) from the field and 33.3% (11-33) from three. UMass shot 53.2% (33-62) from the field and 20% (3-15) from three.
  • UAlbany won the rebounding war 40-35.
  • UAlbany finished with 19 turnovers, UMass committed 12.
 
Scouting Providence
The Friars come into Saturday's matchup with an overall record of 7-3. After posting wins against Rider, Northeaster, and Stonehill to start the season, Providence went 0-2 in the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off against Miami and Saint Louis. The team rebounded for wins against Merrimack and Columbia before falling to TCU and defeating Rhode Island and, most recently, Manhattan.
  • The Friars are averaging 79.0 points per game while holding opponents to 68.5 points.
  • The team is shooting 47.5% from the field, 33.9% from three, and 72.6% from the free throw line.
  • Providence averages 38.6 rebounds per game while limiting opponents to just 29.4.
  • The Providence offense features three scorers who average double figures. Bryce Hopkins leads the team with 15.3 ppg, followed by Devin Carter (11.2 ppg) and ed Croswell (11.2).
  • Hopkins, a 6-7 sophomore, also leads the team in rebounding (8.8 rpg) and minutes (32.7). He is shooting 49.1% from the field and 38.1% from three, but has only attempted 21 shots from beyond the arc.
  • Noah Locke leads the team in shooting from three-point territory. He has hit 19 threes this year on 59 attempts, a clip of 32.2%

#AEHoops Notes (12.5.22)
UMass Lowell continued its strong start to the seasons with two more wins. The River Hawks are off to their best program start in 20 seasons with their 8-1 record. Winners of six in a row, UMass Lowell has the highest NET ranking of any America East team at #53.
 
UMBC added two wins last week thanks for its high-flying offense. The Retrievers scored 109 points and set new program and America East marks with 21 three-pointers in a win over Coppin State on Wednesday. They then poured in 88 points in a win over Lehigh on Saturday.
 
Player of the Week
Jacob Boonyasith, UMBC - Sr., Guard, Grand Rapids, Mich.
  • Averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a 2-0 week for UMBC.
  • Scored a career-high 24 points and added eight assists to lead the Retrievers to a win over Coppin State on Wednesday.
  • Added 17 points in a win over Lehigh on Saturday.
  • Shot 54 percent from the floor (13-for-24) overall and 69 percent from three-point land (9-for-13).
  • This is Boonyasith's first career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor
 
Rookie of the Week
  • TJ Hurley, Vermont - Fr., Guard, Pelham, Ont.
  • Averaged 15.0 points per game in a 2-0 week for Vermont.
  • Shot 59 percent (10-for-17) from the field.
  • Scored 15 points and canned four three-pointers in a win over Merrimack on sunday.
  • This is Hurley's first career #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
 
Coming off winning it's league-best ninth men's basketball title, Vermont is the favorite in the 2022-23 America East Men's Basketball preseason poll. The Catamounts, who also claimed their league-record sixth-straight regular-season title last season, edged out league newcomer Bryant atop the poll. Vermont and Bryant combined to claim four of the six preseason All-Conference team members, which was also unveiled with the poll.
 
Binghamton's Jacob Falko is the lone returning first-team All-America East team member from last season on the preseason All-League squad. He is joined by UMass Lowell's Max Brooks along with Bryant's Charles Pride, a first-team all-NEC choice last year, and Earl Timberlake, as well as Vermont's Dylan Penn and Finn Sullivan.
 
Drive the Lane with UAlbany Hoops
It was announced this fall that UAlbany renewed its partnership with ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team and City Line Bar & Grill. Coaches Dwayne Killings and Colleen Mullen, along with select student-athletes, will join ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team's Charlie Voelker and Dan Bahl every Monday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. live from City Line Bar & Grill for a weekly segment entitled 'Drive the Lane with UAlbany Hoops'. 
 
Fans are invited to come out to City Line Bar & Grill to join Coach Killings, Coach Mullen, student-athletes and the ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team crew. Food and drink specials will be available on a weekly basis as the teams embark on their new seasons and talk hoops every Monday. 
 
Postgame Show Presented by Northwestern Mutual – Capital Region
This fall, the UAlbany men's basketball team announced a new segment with ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team. The UAlbany Basketball Postgame Show Presented by Northwestern Mutual – Capital Region will begin immediately following all games, home and away, for fans to listen to as they commute home or tune in from a distance.
 
The show is set to run for 30 minutes following the final buzzer on 104.5 The Team. Fans will hear initial reactions and a game recap to start the segment followed by interviews with the team. Coach Dwayne Killings and select student-athletes will join ESPN Radio's Rodger Wyland and Michael Johnson Jr. to break down the contest, give insights, opinions, responses, and to discuss the team's next matchup.
 
Fans can tune in to ESPN Radio 104.5 the Team by turning the dial on their radio or by streaming on their computers or smart phones.
 
Home Game Location
Earlier this summer, the UAlbany Athletic Department announced transformational renovations of both SEFCU Arena and the Physical Education Building that will improve the fan experience and provide state-of-the-art facilities for the University's athletic programs and Capital Region community events. Due to the construction, the team will play all of its 2022-23 home games at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
 
FREE with your ID
UAlbany and Hudson Valley students can attend UAlbany basketball home games all season long for FREE. Students who attend games simply need to bring their school-issued ID cards to gain admission to the McDonough Sports Complex.
 
Roster Changes
In total, only seven Great Danes return from last year's roster. Those still with the program are Ny'Mire Little, Gerald Drumgoole Jr., Trey Hutcheson, Aaron Reddish, Tairi Ketner, Justin Neely, and Will Amica.
 
Six new faces join this year's team. Joining the program are transfers Da'Kquan Davis (Arcadia), Malik Edmead (Merrimack), Sarju "Juice" Patel (Cornell), and Japannah Kellogg (Green Bay). Freshman joining the team include local standouts Jonathan Beagle (St. Thomas More) and Marcus Jackson (Cushing Academy).
