Field Hockey Defeats Vermont in Overtime

SCORE: UAlbany 3, Vermont 2

LOCATION: Moulton Winder Field - Burlington, Vt.

RECORDS: UAlbany 4-5, 1-0 America East | Vermont 6-4, 0-2 America East

SHORT STORY: The UAlbany field hockey team came from behind to win, 3-2, in overtime to open the America East season at Vermont.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a great game today by both teams. It could have gone either way. I really liked how our team kept their composure after we went down, 2-1. Jannelle Volk had an amazing goal-line save to keep us in the game. Charlotte Triggs and Isabella Del Vecchio had a nice counterattack that earned us the penalty stroke that Alison Smisdom calmly buried for the game-winner."

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Alison Smisdom scored the game-winning goal in overtime after the Great Danes earned a penalty stroke.
  • Smisdom led the team with three points from two goals and one assist and six shots, including three on goal.
  • Seniors Robyn Murray and Elaina Burchell each scored a goal to tie the game in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts scored the first goal in the second minute of the game.
  • The Great Danes followed shortly with a score from Robyn Murray. Assisted by junior Julie Rodijk, Murray scored the penalty corner goal just over four minutes later in the sixth minute.
  • UAlbany held a 12-0 advantage in shots and an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners during the second and third quarters but the game remained tied until the fourth.
  • Three minutes and 32 seconds into the fourth quarter, Vermont gained a 2-1 lead.
  • Once again, the Great Danes tied the score. With less than five minutes on the fourth-quarter clock, Elaina Burchell and Alison Smisdom combined for the tying score during a penalty corner.
  • At the end of regulation, the game was tied, 2-2.
  • The Catamounts earned the first offensive chance in overtime but freshman goalie Lara Behn and sophomore Jannelle Volk combined for a save and a defensive save to halt the Vermont shots.
  • Smisdom scored the game-winning goal after UAlbany won a penalty stroke attempt. The first year took the attempt for a successful penalty stroke in the seventh minute of overtime.

NEXT: The Great Danes return home to host two games against out-of-state opponents next weekend. Maine will visit for a Friday contest before UNC competes on Sunday, October 3.
