SHORT STORY: The UAlbany field hockey team came from behind to win, 3-2, in overtime to open the America East season at Vermont.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a great game today by both teams. It could have gone either way. I really liked how our team kept their composure after we went down, 2-1.
Jannelle Volk had an amazing goal-line save to keep us in the game.
Charlotte Triggs and
Isabella Del Vecchio had a nice counterattack that earned us the penalty stroke that
Alison Smisdom calmly buried for the game-winner."
KEY STATS
- Freshman Alison Smisdom scored the game-winning goal in overtime after the Great Danes earned a penalty stroke.
- Smisdom led the team with three points from two goals and one assist and six shots, including three on goal.
- Seniors Robyn Murray and Elaina Burchell each scored a goal to tie the game in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts scored the first goal in the second minute of the game.
- The Great Danes followed shortly with a score from Robyn Murray. Assisted by junior Julie Rodijk, Murray scored the penalty corner goal just over four minutes later in the sixth minute.
- UAlbany held a 12-0 advantage in shots and an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners during the second and third quarters but the game remained tied until the fourth.
- Three minutes and 32 seconds into the fourth quarter, Vermont gained a 2-1 lead.
- Once again, the Great Danes tied the score. With less than five minutes on the fourth-quarter clock, Elaina Burchell and Alison Smisdom combined for the tying score during a penalty corner.
- At the end of regulation, the game was tied, 2-2.
- The Catamounts earned the first offensive chance in overtime but freshman goalie Lara Behn and sophomore Jannelle Volk combined for a save and a defensive save to halt the Vermont shots.
- Smisdom scored the game-winning goal after UAlbany won a penalty stroke attempt. The first year took the attempt for a successful penalty stroke in the seventh minute of overtime.
NEXT: The Great Danes return home to host two games against out-of-state opponents next weekend. Maine will visit for a Friday contest before UNC competes on Sunday, October 3.
