Charlotte Triggs scored a goal, the eventual game-winning tally, for the Great Danes to open the weekend in Ithaca, Friday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "Each game we are getting sharper and sharper. We have learned from our growing pains. The team's defense was very good today, and we had to be against a very strong Cornell team."
KEY STATS
- Leading the team in assists, sophomore Charlotte Triggs scored her second goal of the season to put the Great Danes on the board in the third quarter.
- UAlbany outshot the Big Red, 10-8, with a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
- Goalies senior Sheridan Messier and junior Hannah Mangan combined for the first shutout of the season with one official save and many chances stopped.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes and the Big Red played a back-and-forth contest throughout the first 30 minutes of play. UAlbany owned the 8-6 advantage in shots during the top half.
- Almost 10 minutes into the third quarter, Charlotte Triggs scored the first, and lone, goal of the game, unassisted. The sophomore picked up a loose ball in the circle and used a backhanded push to score the goal from about 10 yards out.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 18, against No. 1 Michigan. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at Marsha Dodson Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
