Fairfield Takes 2-1 Win Against Field Hockey

SCORE: Fairfield 2, UAlbany 1

LOCATION: Alumni Turf in Albany, N.Y.

RECORDS: UAlbany 1-1, 0-0 | Fairfield 1-1, 0-0

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes held a 12-0 edge in shots during the first half with freshman Alison Smisdom scoring the first goal of the game. Colgate came back to earn two goals and take the game.

COACH ANDY THORNTON: "It was a tough loss today. I thought we controlled large parts of the game but needed to capitalize on our possession and shots early on. I give credit to Fairfield for hanging in there and coming away with the win. We saw lots of positives today and we look forward to next week's contests."

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Blanca Orsola and sophomore Charlotte Triggs led the Great Danes during the first half with three shots each.
  • Smisdom scored the second goal of her collegiate career in just as many games. The first-year collected a rebound from senior Robyn Murray's shot for the tally.
  • Four Great Danes tallied two shots on goal against the Stags.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes dominated the first half holding a 12-0 edge in shots over the Stags. Eight of UAlbany's first-half shots were on goal.
  • Two minutes and 14 seconds into the second half, Murray took a shot from the top of the circle, only to be stopped by the Fairfield goalie. One second later, Smisdom collected the rebound and sunk the ball into the net for the first score of the day.
  • Just over two minutes later, the Stags evened the playing field with a goal of their own.
  • The Stags took the lead with 3:48 on the third-quarter clock with a tricky pass to dodge the goalie, freshman Lara Behn, and shoot into the opposite corner.
  • UAlbany attempted to gain back an even score in the fourth quarter with one corner and three shots, but their efforts were unsuccessful and Fairfield went home with the win.

NEXT: The Great Danes will travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to play a two o'clock game against Wagner on Friday, September 3, before returning home for an afternoon game against UMass at Alumni Turf on Sunday, September 5.
