Men's Basketball Signs Three

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany men's basketball head coach Dwayne Killings has announced the signing of three additional players for the 2021 recruiting class.

Matt Cerruti, a 6-4 guard from Huntingdon Valley, Pa., is transferring to UAlbany from Division II Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.

"Our program is very fortunate to welcome Matt Cerruti to the Great Dane community," said Killings.  "Matt has developed into a dynamic shooter, accomplished student, and a fierce competitor on the court.  Making the jump from Division 2 to Division 1 is not easy but Matt's work ethic and self-belief will guide him to help make our team ready for the competition of the 2021-22 season.  His experience and leadership qualities will not only be welcomed on the court but within the Capital Region."

"Coach Killings and the rest of the staff made me feel like family right away which was super important," said Cerruti.  "I am super excited to get to work and help contribute to the vision the coaching staff has."

In three full seasons at Lock Haven, Cerruti appeared in 80 games, averaging 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists.  He shot .429 from three, including .462 from deep during the 2019-20 season.  Lock Haven did not play during the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Gerald Drumgoole, a 6-5 guard/forward from Rochester, N.Y., is transferring to UAlbany from ACC institution Pittsburgh.

"I'm very excited to get this opportunity to play for this program and Coach Killings," said Drumgoole.  "It's time for us to turn this program around and it starts with us working hard and having great support from our fans and the City of Albany."

"Coach Tibbs and I both had a chance to watch Gerald when he was coming through the AAU ranks," said Killings.  "When he was receptive to our interest, it was a no brainer to welcome Gerald and his family to UAlbany.  Having played for Jim Harts' Albany City Rocks AAU program, and playing in the ACC at Pittsburgh, Gerald brings a work ethic and competitive spirit that is focused on winning.  We cannot wait to get to work and to watch his family and friends in Rochester support him during his journey in the Capital Region."

During the 2019-20 season with the Panthers, Drumgole averaged 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 21 appearances.  He played his first three years of high school at West Irondequoit in Rochester, averaging 19.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists as a junior, before finishing his high school career at La Lumiere.  There, he went 29-1 and his team finished as the national runner-up.

Paul Newman, a 6-9 center from Philadelphia, Pa., is transferring to UAlbany from Patriot League institution Bucknell University.

"We are so excited to welcome Paul Newman to the UAlbany Basketball family," said Killings.  "Paul arrives to the Capital Region after earning his degree from Bucknell and playing for Bison Head Coach Nathan Davis.  Paul brings a level of Philly toughness, passion for the game, and high character to our program and community.  Paul has truly embraced our desire to bring a servant leader, that has a desire to win immediately within our program.  We can't wait for Paul to arrive this summer and join our Purple Fam."

"I am super excited and can't wait to embark on this new journey in my life at the University at Albany," said Newman.  "I chose UAlbany because it is a perfect fit for me.  The coaching staff is very family-oriented and all about hard work and the #Mentality they have is something I want to be a part of.  UAlbany is a great place to be and I can't wait to build relationships with my teammates and the community of UAlbany while potentially playing for a championship and going to the NCAA tournament."

In four seasons at Bucknell, Newman appeared in 96 games and made 32 starts.  He averaged 3.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game during his career with the Bison.  Newman appeared in all 12 games for the Bison in the COVID-19-shortened season, making 10 starts and shooting .622 from the field.  Before Bucknell, Newman played at Roman Catholic High School and postgrad at St. Andrew's School.
