RIO DE JANEIRO – In what has become a common site over the last two years, University at Albany high jumper Alexander Bowen competed once again for Panama, this time in the Ibero-American Championships. The meet acted as a pseudo preview for this year's Olympic Games in Rio, which will host the track & field competition in the same stadium.
Bowen, who is the Panamanian national record holder in the high jump, placed in a tie for eighth in his signature event in 7'-0.5”. Bowen shared eighth place with Carlos Layoy from Argentina. He will continue competing for Panama through the summer as he has his sights set on competing in the Olympic Games this summer.
Also competing at this meet was UAlbany alumnus Ricardo Estremera. Estremera, who is the UAlbany record-holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, placed third overall in the same event in 8:40.87, winning the bronze medal, representing Puerto Rico.
Bowen will compete at NCAA East Preliminary Championships with his Great Dane teammates next week.
