No. 11 Field Hockey Earns Second Straight Shutout with 6-0 Win Against Siena

ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany field hockey (6-0) extended its winning streak with a mid-week win against Siena on Wednesday afternoon.

“Mid-week games are always a challenge,” said head coach Phil Sykes. “It's tough to stay focused. Siena played well, and they threatened us early in the second half. We picked it up in the second period and ended up with a solid result.”

Senior Daphne Voormolen led the Great Danes on offense, tallying two goals and two assists for six points total. Freshman midfielder and two-time America East Rookie of the Week Paula Heuser also scored two goals for the Great Danes.

Kelly Bonner scored the first goal for the Great Danes on a 2-on-1 opportunity in the circle from Voormolen. Echo Bretz tallied her third goal this season on a similar play from Voormolen less than one minute later.

The Great Danes maintained a 2-0 lead for the remaining 31 minutes of the first half.

Freshman Averill Erdody replaced Maxi Primus in the cage for the Great Danes in the second half.

UAlbany tallied three goals in seven minutes in the opening moments of the second period. Voormolen notched her first goal of the afternoon from Bonner in the 40th minute. Heuser scored just over one minute later, unassisted.

Voormolen recorded her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty corner. Midfielder Fiori Van Rijswijk inserted the corner, with Corrine McConville stopping at the top of the circle. Voormolen fired into the bottom right corner for the final goal of the game.

UAlbany hits the road after a four-game homestand to face Lafayette at 7 p.m., on Friday Sept. 20 and Lehigh at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 22.
