Rock Hill, S.C- UAlbany softball completes the Adidas Invitational with a win over UNC-Wilmington, 4-3, on Sunday, March 11. Brittany McFawn, Brittany Schwieger and Charlise Castro were all named to the All-Tournament team after their stellar performances. UAlbany finishes its preseason tournaments at George Mason for the Cherry Blossom Tournament next weekend from March 16-18.
For the second time in the tournament UAlbany would quickly fall behind 3-0 after one inning. UNC-Wilmington after giving up two quick outs would get on with a single and a walk then a two-out three-run homer by its catcher Pinno to go up 3-0.
UAlbany would come back in the top of the third inning with four runs of its own to grab the lead 4-3. The inning began with Kayla Cilley reaching on an error followed by a walk by Lindsey Stout then Alexa Toole reached on a fielder's choice to have the bases loaded. Vicky MacFarland continued the inning with a RBI-walk to drive in the Great Danes first run, 3-1. Diane McDowell followed with a sac-fly to left to drive in a run then Mel Herndon capped the inning with a two-run single up the middle to give the Great Danes its first lead of the game, 4-3.
With the 4-3 lead in tact, Allie Weiser would pitch the next four innings of no-run ball and struck out eight of the final 12 batters of the game to put the Great Danes at .500 for the season for the first time (5-5).
