UAlbany Softball Get Season's First Win Against Jacksonville State, 6-5; Cannata At 498 Wins

Statesboro, Ga.- The UAlbany softball team split on Saturday on day two of the Eagle Classic in Statesboro, Ga., defeating Jacksonville State, 6-5, and losing to host Georgia Southern, 13-5, in five innings. Charlise Castro recorded all three of her hits on the day against Jacksonville State, including two RBIs and a run scored in the win. The Great Danes improve to 1-3 on the season and will finish the Eagle Classic on Sunday against Radford (930 am).
     In game two, McFawn would pitch four strong innings for UAlbany scattering four hits and one run over four innings but would get a no-decision being down 1-0.
     The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State would build on their lead to two, 2-0, with another run from a two-out single by Jessica Guy to drive in Kaycee Crow.
     The Great Danes would grab their first lead of the game,3-2, in the top of the sixth scoring three runs on four hits, which was highlighted by two two-out doubles, one by Castro that drove in two runs and the other by Lauren Alcorn that drove the other.
     The Gamecocks would tie the game at three apiece, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch from Allie Weiser to bring in Hayden Crawford
     Then in the top of the seventh, UAlbany with another two-out rally scored three runs to grab the lead, 6-3, as Katie Wambold put the exclamation point on the rally with a two-run homer down the left field line. Jacksonville State's Shelby Holley looked to bring her team back in the game with a two-out two-run homer but Weiser would shut the door to get the final out and UAlbany's first victory of the season.
     UAlbany recorded its earliest lead of the tournament in game one, 2-1, in the bottom of the second from Alexa Toole driving in two runs on a single to right.
North Florida would jump on Brittany Schweiger early by scoring five on five hits in the top of the third to go up, 6-1. Lauren Pollack began the five run inning with a solo homer to center.
     The Great Danes would try to get back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, 6-3, from a two-out triple by Vicky McFarland. But the Osprey's would tag relief pitcher Krystn Benson for seven runs on five hits in the top of the fifth to reach the eight-run rule after five.
