A Career Game By Suero Helps UAlbany Win Over UMBC, 87-76, On Wednesday

Albany, N.Y.- Gerardo Suero with a career-high 32 points helped lead UAlbany over UMBC, 87-76, on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes extend their undefeated record at home to 9-0 on the season and improve to 15-9 overall with a 7-3 conference record. UMBC falls to 3-18 overall and 2-8 in the America East conference.
     Suero was the game's leading scorer with a career-best 32 points on 10-of-15 shooting and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Logan Aronhalt helped carry the load tallying 21 points, 3-of-7 from beyond the arc along with four rebounds. The Great Danes outshot the Retrievers, 51.9 to 48.5 percent, from the floor and out rebounded them as well, 37-27.
     UMBC's Ryan Cook had a team-best and season-best 28 points and eight rebounds to help fill-in for the injured Chase Plummer. Cook coming into the game was averaging only 12.0 points per game before the contest. Thomas Chandler and Brian Neller each scored in double-digits with 19 and 17, respectively.
     UAlbany began the first half on a 14-4 run after going down 4-0 to grab the early lead, 14-8, with 12:19 left to play in the half. Suero led the run with seven points and added an assist as well. The Great Danes would extend the lead as high as 17 points, 39-22, with 3:10 remaining in the half.
     UMBC would climb right back into the game by ending the half on a 12-5 run that was sparked by a Chandler Thomas three-point play.
     UAlbany would shoot an eye-popping 51.7 percent from the floor with Suero leading all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. UMBC shot well at the half, shooting 47.1 percent with Ryan Cook scoring 13 points on 6-of-10 from the floor.
     The Great Danes would open up the second half on a 22-8 run to grab the largest lead of the game at 24 points, 66-42, with 11:27 left in the game. The run was capped off by a Aronhalt three from the right shoulder of the arc.
     The Retrievers would be able to cut the deficit to single-digits, 82-73, with 1:09 remaining in the game. Chandler would score eight of 19 points during that stretch. But UAlbany would shut the door, hitting the next 5-of-6 free-throws to end the game.
     UAlbany will look forward to the Big Purple Growl on Saturday, Feb. 4 where the team will face Stony Brook at SEFCU Arena (7pm).
