Volleyball Sweeps Providence to Remain Undefeated in League Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sara Pope finished with 14 kills to lead
UAlbany to a 3-0 sweep of Providence in America East Conference volleyball
action on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Great Danes posted scores of
25-9, 25-13, and 15-16 in the victory. With the win, the Great Danes improve to
9-1 overall, and 6-0 in league play.
Sara Pope finished with six kills
in the first set for the Great Danes, while Traci Vandegrift and Alberte
Bjornsson each recorded three kills each. UAlbany hit .364 in the set,
quarterbacked by setter Gabby Whitworth, who handed out 14 assists.
Pope also paced UAlbany in set
two, finishing with four kills on six attempts, while Vandegrift recorded
another three kills. Viktoriia Stroilo continued her strong defensive play,
coming up with 10 digs, while Tatum Jungsten and Samantha Brostrom teamed up
for the lone UAlbany block.
In the third and final set, Pope
recorded a team-best four kills, while Brostrom helped out with three kills.
Whitworth handed out 10 assists, while Stroilo and Vandegrift combined for 17
digs in the set.
Whitworth's strong setting helped
UAlbany hit .276 as a team, as she handed out 35 assists, while UAlbany held
Providence to just a .028 hitting percentage. Vandegrift totaled seven kills
and nine digs, while Bjornsson and Brostrom each finished with six kills
apiece. Stroilo recorded 31 digs, and sophomore Kathleen Horvath came in to
serve and play in the back row, totally nine digs and four of UAlbany's six
service aces.
Providence (1-23, AE 0-6) was led
by Colleen McCollom with eight kills.
UAlbany will return to action on
Wednesday, hosting Colgate in non-conference action. The Great Danes will be
playing their annual "Dig Pink" match, raising money for the Side Out
Foundation, which supports breast cancer research. The match will also be
televised on Time Warner Cable Sports.
