UAlbany Comes Alive in Second Half; Christina Patrick Scores in Overtime to Upend Yale

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany came alive late in the second half to force overtime before completing the comeback in the 76th minute of this non-conference field hockey match played on Alumni Turf Field Sunday afternoon. Christina Patrick received a pass near the endline from Daphne Voormolen as she fell saving the ball, but got the shot off for the game winning goal in overtime.

"I was trying to keep the ball inbounds and it was just a reaction to scrape it through the goalkeeper's legs," said Patrick about the overtime goal. "To win in overtime is pure excitement and an amazing feeling. After playing so hard against UConn (on Saturday), we were just trying to pick each other up at halftime. Once we got the first goal, we just kept going."

Yale would start the scoring early in the first stanza with their first penalty corner attempt as Erin Carter put away her first of two goals in the game. Carter was set-up by Mia Rosati and Chelsey Locarno. A Bulldog foul resulting in a penalty stroke for UAlbany, taken by McConville in the 25th minute, brought the score to 1-1 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs took back the lead in the 39th minute when Carter took a shot off the penalty corner attempt as the blaze was deflected by Dinah Landshut for her second goal of the season and a 2-1 Yale advantage. The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty stroke 13 minutes later in which Carter took the shot giving her team a 3-1 advantage.

In the 57th minute, UAlbany ignited their sticks and scored off a penalty corner. Put in by Christina Patrick and stopped by Chantae Miller, Voormolen took a clear shot into the right corner of the net and put the Great Danes within one goal. UAlbany would register five shots on goal over the next six minutes in effort to capture the equalizer. For the Bulldogs, Georgia Holland registered a defensive save in effort to stop the Great Dane comeback. With less than two minutes to play in the game, Corrine McConville would hit the target about five yards out as she received a crisp pass from Voormolen, bringing the score to 3-3.

"The win wasn't pretty, but effective nonetheless," said UAlbany Head Coach Phil Sykes. "We were worried as the coaching staff about coming out today after a high level match yesterday and having a let down. Today we showed tremendous character and perseverance to grab the victory."

The goalkeepers on both sides kept busy the entire game. For the Bulldogs, Emily Cain had 11 saves in the loss while UAlbany's Kristi Troch registered eight saves and took her fourth win on the season.

UAlbany's Taylor Luke would also register a defensive safe early in the overtime frame. The Great Danes outshot Yale 23-15 and had a 13-7 advantage on penalty corner attempts.

The Great Danes take the next few days off, returning to play next Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. contest with Davidson on Alumni Turf Field.
