Tallahassee, Fla. - UAlbany volleyball opened up the 2011 season at the Florida State Invitational on Friday, dropped two matches with Kentucky and Tulsa. In the first match of the day, the Great Danes lost a 3-1 decision to the Wildcats with scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-16. UAlbany then fell, 3-0, to the Hurricanes by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21.
In the first match against Kentucky, senior Brooke Stanley returned to the court after missing last season with an injury, and posted a double-double of 36 assists and 11 digs for the Great Danes. Sophomore middle blocker Traci Vandegrift led UAlbany offensively, recording 14 kills while also contributing 14 digs and two service aces. Senior Casey Wright also reached double-digit kill totals with 10 to go along with four total blocks and a .318 hitting percentage. Seniors Abbey Wexel and Laurie Gonzalez also totaled double-digit digs for the Great Danes with 12 and 15, respectively.
For the Wildcats, Backy Pavan recorded 18 kills on .516 hitting, while also adding five digs, three blocks and a service ace. Ashley Frazier contributed 14 kills, while setter Elizabeth Koberstein finished with 53 assists, seven kills, six digs and two service aces. Stephanie Klefot led Kentucky (1-0) with 21 digs defensively.
Later in the day against Tulsa, the Hurricanes held the Great Danes to a .165 hitting percentage as a team, and recorded four total blocks. UAlbany was led by Dunja Prgomet with nine kills, while Vandegrift finished with seven kills and a team-high 13 digs. Stanley recorded 25 assists to go along with six digs and one block assist while Wexel added nine digs and one service ace from the back row.
Tyler Henderson totaled 19 kills on .457 hitting for Tulsa (1-0), while setter Jordan Clampitt recorded a double-double of 42 assists and 10 digs. Kelsey Hancock added 10 kills and Jessica Adams led the Hurricanes defensively with 11 digs. Carly Boatwright paced Tulsa at the net, as she finished with three block assists and four kills.
UAlbany (0-2) will return to action on Saturday, taking on host Florida State at 11:30 a.m.
