Baltimore, Md. - University at Albany's Kadine Johnson won the hammer throw to highlight her team's performance on the first day of competition at the America East Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, May 7 at UMBC Stadium. UAlbany stands in second with 54 points and is just behind first-place New Hampshire, who accounted for 55 through seven events.
Johnson, a senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., became the first UAlbany athlete to win the hammer with a toss of 174-feet, 7-inches, a facility record. She was nearly 10 feet ahead of runner-up Rosemary Read, of New Hampshire. Johnson, who was seventh at Penn Relays last weekend, is the school record-holder in this event.
Jenn Pierson placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and reached the finish line in 10:56.95. Pat McNish was third in the long jump (18-9.75), while teammate Ashley Mahlmeister was fourth (18-9.25). Ashley Grant (high jump) and Melissa Del Rosario (10,000-meters) recorded fourth-place showings. Rebecca Powers scored points in the javelin and shot put by finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Alli Rogers had the fastest-time in 400-meter dash qualifying at 55.37 seconds, bettering the ECAC mark. Rebecca Kelly went a season-best 1:01.23 in the 400-hurdles, the top time in the preliminary round. Christen Griffin qualified for Sunday's finals in the 100- and 200-dashes and 100-meter hurdles.
