UAlbany Falls Short to Maryland, 83-72; Suero Scores 20-plus for the Ninth Time

College Park, Md.- Terrell Stoglin's 22-point effort helped Maryland (8-3) defeat UAlbany (7-6), 83-72, on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at the Comcast Center. Both Pe'Shon Howard and Alex Len, who haven't factored in the Terrapin's last nine-of-ten games, combined for 25 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists in Maryland's win. The Great Danes' Gerardo Suero continues to be a consistent scorer having gone for his fifth consecutive 20-plus point game and ninth overall on the season. Suero arguably had his best performance overall having not only scored 22 points but added seven rebounds (5 offensive) and eight assists.
UAlbany shot 38.9 percent (28-72) from the field and 37.5 percent (9-24) from beyond the arc. Suero was one of four Great Danes in double-figures with 22 followed by Luke Devlin (16), Logan Aronhalt (13), and Mike Black (13).
Maryland was led by Stoglin's 22 points and was helped out by four other teammates in double-figures as well. Len chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds then James Padgett's 13 points and seven rebounds followed by Howard's 11 points and Faust's 10. The Terrapin's led the game in rebounds by a margin of 49-28.
The Great Danes broke out in the second half with a 7-0 run to grab their first lead of the game, 46-44, with 17:47 left to play. The run started off nine seconds into the second half with one of Luke Devlin's four three-pointers that he hit in the game. UAlbany would be able to go as high as two points for a lead, 52-50, at 12:56 left to play in the game.
But the Terrapins would then go on a hot streak and make a 15-2 run in three-minute span to go up 65-54 with 9:42 left to play in the game. Stoglin would score five of the 15 points in that run including one of his six three's in the game.
UAlbany looked for a chance to comeback when they cut the deficit to three, 74-71, with 3:40 left to play. Suero would help out by scoring seven of his 22 points in the late stretch but the Great Danes would fall short in their comeback run as the Terrapins finished out the game on a 9-1 run.
Maryland came out to a 13-4 lead with 15:25 left to play in the first half. The Terrapins' Alex Len, after serving a 10-game suspension, started with bang by getting his first points of the game off a one-handed alley-oop from teammate Terrell Stoglin.
UAlbany came right back with its own 9-3 run to cut the deficit, 34-28, with 4:17 left to play in the first. The run was capped off by a Mike Black three-pointer from the lower rightside of the arc.
Both teams would swap baskets in the last three minutes of the half with Maryland's Len hitting a five-footer with :02 seconds left to give the Terrapins a 44-39 lead at the half.
