Des Moines, Iowa - University at Albany's Sean Halpin ran the eighth-fastest time in men's 1,500-meter run qualifying at the USA Junior National Track & Field Championships on Friday, June 25 at Drake Stadium. The five-day event, which consists of athletes ranging from 14 to 19 years-old, is the qualifying meet for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics.
Halpin, who eclipsed the standard for the national competition by winning the mile in a meet-record time of 4:08.77 at the Great Dane Classic on Jan. 22, navigated the track in 3:55.51. The freshman ran in the second of two heats which unexpectedly produced the afternoon's top-10 marks. Princeton's Peter Callahan won the heat in 3:50.74.
Halpin, an 18-year-old from Mount Vernon, N.Y., will have the opportunity to become the eighth Great Dane to be named a Junior National All-American when he races against 11 other competitors in the men's 1,500-meter final tomorrow evening at 6:40 p.m. Eastern.
