Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany earned the second seed in the 2010
America East Conference Field Hockey Championship, and will take on
third-ranked Boston U. on Friday afternoon. New Hampshire won its first
outright America East field hockey regular season championship for the first
time since 2000 to earn the top seed for the championship and will host the
four-team tournament on Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6.
No. 2 UAlbany and #3
Boston U. will meet in the second semifinal on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial
Field, while #1 New Hampshire and #4 Maine will play the first game. The
winners will meet for the championship on Saturday, November 6. The America
East tournament champion will host the winner of the Northeast Conference in an
NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, November 9.
The Wildcats (13-6,
AE 5-0), who moved up to 19th on the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National
Coaches' Poll this week, earned hosting rights with a 4-1 defeat of UAlbany last
Saturday. The Great Danes (13-5, AE 4-1) remained at No. 15 on the national
poll. Boston U. (10-7, 3-2) went into extra sessions for the second time in as
many games, but defeated Maine (13-5, 2-3) on Saturday by a 2-1 score in
overtime. The Terriers earned the third seed in the tournament with the win,
while the Black Bears wound up in the fourth slot for the championship.
This is the second
consecutive year that these four teams have comprised the championship field.
The semifinal match between Albany and Boston U. is a rematch of last year's
final, which the Terriers won, 4-1.

UAlbany, which remained ranked 15th in
the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll for the second straight
week, will once again have a representative at the NFHCA Division I North/South
Senior Game. Defender Suzy Clephane, who was the 2009 America East Conference
Defensive Player of the Year, is the second Great Dane to play in the North-South
Game. Current UAlbany assistant coach Michelle Simpson played in 2008.
