SHORT STORY: The Great Danes took advantage of a strong defense to open the conference season with a 2-0 shutout over Maine, Friday afternoon.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a good game today. Maine is always a big rival for us in conference - we knew it was going to be a tough game. I'm very proud of our girls. All of the things we've been working on, we applied to the game well today. To get a 2-0 win and be 1-0 in the conference was a big goal for us and we are glad we achieved it."

  • In the second quarter, Emma Staron scored the first goal of the contest. Lillian Willis broke away from a couple of defenders in the circle and passed the ball to Staron to finish the goal.
  • The Black Bears earned a corner that led to a shot on goal with 1:20 remaining in the second half but UAlbany goalie, Emma Peeters, stopped the ball and saved the lead headed into halftime.
  • The Great Danes came out of the break with a fire and collected two corners and six shots, five on goal, in a five-minute span.
