Georgia Tech Uses Defensive Pressure to Defeat UAlbany, 78-51, in 4th Annual Legends Classic

Atlanta, Ga. - Iman Shumpert had 24 points and 10 rebounds in leading Georgia Tech to a 78-51 victory over UAlbany in the Legends Classic's Atlanta Regional on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Georgia Tech (2-1) led 12-9 in the opening period, but then ripped off 11 unanswered. Kammeon Holsey and Lance Storrs hit back-to-back baskets to start the run. Shumpert, who made 10-of-16 from the field after shooting 20 percent coming into the contest, buried a three-point field goal from the left wing to push the lead to double figures.
Still leading 23-13, the Yellow Jackets turned up their defensive pressure to score 16 of the game's next 20 points. After Storrs nailed a three-pointer, Shumpert tallied four consecutive baskets, including a pair off two of his four steals. His put an exclamation point on the decisive stretch with a 3-pointer. Georgia Tech took a 49-19 to halftime by scoring 22 points off 17 turnovers by the visitors.
"We caught them at the worst time following a tough loss," UAlbany coach Will Brown, noting Georgia Tech's disappointing 17-point defeat in their previous outing. "We never gave ourselves a chance (in the first half). Our turnovers led directly to baskets. They have length and are athletic and we knew they would come after us with pressure."
UAlbany (0-3) settled down in the second half behind the play of Tim Ambrose, who had 16 points. Logan Aronhalt scored 12 of his 14 after the intermission. Sophomore Jacob Iati, who made his first career start for injured point guard Mike Black, was effective with seven points and five assists. The Great Danes whittled the lead down to 71-51 on Aronhalt's long-range jumper, before Georgia Tech tallied the game's final seven points.
"Our two points guard (Iati and Ralph Watts) are a work in progress," offered Brown, whose team committed just eight miscues after the break. "I was pleased how we played in the second half. We calmed down, played hard and handled the pressure much better."
Daniel Miller and Mfon Udofia each had 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who made 32 of 68 from the field, including 55.6-percent shooting in the opening period.
