Troy, N.Y. ? Celine Cauderlier and Ashley Lewis eclipsed school records in the pole vault and javelin throw, respectively, to lead the UAlbany men's and women's outdoor track and field teams at the Capital District Classic hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, April 25 at Harkness Field. A total of ten Great Dane women and five men won events at the meet.
Cauderlier, who was France's high school national champion in the pole vault, cleared 11-feet, 7.75-inches to win the event by over a foot. She beat Corinna Hengen's old record of 10-10 set in 2006 and 2007. Lewis' winning mark in the javelin throw was 136-6, bettering Isabella Katsarelis' throw of 125-4 set in 2006. She also set a personal record by almost 18 feet to become the first Great Dane on the women's team to reach the qualifying standard for the ECAC meet in the event. Ritshell Verdier also met an ECAC standard by winning the discus throw with a toss that sailed 149-2.
In other field events, the women's team had first-place marks in the long jump, triple jump and shot put. Even though she is primarily a thrower, Lewis leaped 16-11.25 to win the long jump. Traequanda Brock had a personal-best mark of 37-4 in the triple jump, while Kadine Johnson recorded a toss which sailed 40-4.25 in the shot put.
The Great Dane women also dominated the sprinting events. Sarah Lapierre won the 100-meter dash in 12.94 seconds, and Jessica Hunter clocked in a time of 25.74 to win the 200. UAlbany had the top-four finishers in the 400, led by Tenica Roberts' time of 59.36. Ada Lauterbach finished the 1,500-meter run in 4:50.15 and Christen Griffin posted a time of 15.06 to round out the list of first-place finishers on the women's squad.
Pat Weider, Garrett Askew, Bryan Lasky, Paul Lagno and Michael Lynch were all victorious in their respective events for the UAlbany men's team. Weider won the 100-meter dash in 10.91, while Askew finished the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.94. Both marks were just shy of the IC4A standards. Lasky finished the 800-meter run in 1:57.08, and Lagno's winning time in the 1,500 was 4:04.24. Lynch won the discus throw with a toss that sailed 151-3.
The UAlbany outdoor track and field teams will compete at the America East Conference Championships at Binghamton University on May 2-3. The men's team will look to win its fifth straight title and sixth in seven years, while the women's squad will look to win its third championship overall and first since 2007.
