The University at Albany men's track and field's
Jacob Smith and
Leonard Durau have been named the Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the America East Conference, announced Tuesday.
Jacob Smith, a graduate transfer hailing from the United Kingdom, competed in the 1500m and the 800m at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Excelling in the 1500m, Smith set the program record in the event with a time of 3:42.64, beating the previous record set in 2011 by Paul Lagno by just over two seconds. With his new 1500m time, Smith is currently ranked third in the Northeast in the event, and first in the America East.
A native of Constanta, Romania,
Leonard Durau competed in the triple jump at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Durau's first outdoor triple jump as a Great Dane puts him seventh in program history in the event. Durau's mark, 15.20 (49-10.5) is currently the second-best mark in the Northeast region and leads the America East.
These are the first weekly awards for both Smith and Durau this outdoor season.
The track and field programs will return to action on April 10 when they remain in the Capital Region to compete in RPI's Under the Lights.
