Early Goal Leads Stony Brook Past UAlbany Men's Soccer, 1-0, in A-East Play

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Berian Gobeil scored his fourth goal of the season early in the first half to lead Stony Brook past UAlbany, 1-0, in an America East Conference men's soccer match on Saturday, Oct. 17 at LaValle Stadium.
     Stony Brook (3-9-2, AE 2-2-0), which most recently handed Binghamton its only conference loss of the season, got on the board in the 11th minute when Gobeil headed in a free kick taken from the middle of the field. Collin Geoghegan was credited with an assist on the play.
     UAlbany (0-10-3, AE 0-3-1), which was outshot by a 7-1 margin through the opening 45 minutes, turned it on in the second half and almost got on the scoreboard in the 71st minute. After Bo Jelovac blasted the ball off the post, Claudio Dantas made a bid to net the equalizer on the rebound. The senior's shot was saved by goalkeeper Anthony Rogic, and Rikkert Pilaar's third attempt for the team to tie the match up was blocked by a defender and cleared out of harm's way. The Seawolves would hang on for the remaining 19 minutes to post the one-goal win.
     Goalkeeper Adrian Foncette turned away six of the 18 shots he faced in the losing effort for the Great Danes. Stony Brook's Rogic made three saves on eight chances to earn his second shutout of the season.
     The Great Danes return to action at Varsity Field on Wednesday, Oct. 21 when they host first-place New Hampshire at 2 p.m.
