Kamisha Kellam Leads Volleyball to Undefeated Regular Season in 3-1 Win Over Stony Brook

MVP Kamisha Kellam Leads Great Danes to UAlbany Volleyball Classic Championship

Albany, N.Y. ? Senior middle blocker Kamisha Kellam earned most valuable player honors to help lead UAlbany to an undefeated record and the UAlbany Classic title, as the Great Danes defeated Wright State and Connecticut on Saturday, both by scores of 3-0. UAlbany defeated the Raiders early on the final day of play with scores of 25-21, 25, 18 and 25 16. The Great Danes followed with a three-game sweep of the Huskies with scores of 31-29, 26-24 and 25-17.

            Kellam recorded a match-high ten kills to lead UAlbany against Wright State (1-5). Kellam, who hit .571 in the match, also recorded three block assists for the Great Danes. Sophomore setter Brooke Stanley tallied a double-double with 33 assists and ten digs, while freshman libero Laurie Gonzalez led the team defensively with eleven digs.

            Junior outside hitter Lexi Leonhard led Wright State with seven kills, while freshman outside hitter Leilani Tafuna added six kills and a team-high nine digs. Shaunda Sandifer was named to the all-tournament team for the Raiders.

            UAlbany handed Connecticut (5-1) its first loss of the season in the final match of the day. Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded a double-double with ten kills and a team-high 18 digs. Classmate Valerie Sourbeer led the team with 13 kills, while Gonzalez added ten digs. Senior middle blocker Hillary White finished with seven total blocks to go along with six kills.

            Connecticut was led offensively by freshman outside hitter Jordan Kirk, who finished with 12 kills. Sophomore right side hitter Lauren Lamberti, who was named to the all-tournament team, added eleven kills, while senior outside hitter Chauntay Mickens added ten. Junior libero Jessica Isaac finished with 21 digs for the Huskies, while setter Annie Luhrsen also earned a spot on the all-tournament team after recording 38 assists in the match.

            Cowdrey and Sourbeer joined Kellam on the all-tournament team to represent the Great Danes. Sophomore middle blocker Kristin Bignell was named to the all-tournament squad for Buffalo.

            UAlbany (3-3) returns to action next weekend, as they compete at the University of Kentucky Tournament. The Great Danes will face the host Wildcats along with Indiana and Eastern Kentucky.
