Volleyball Sweeps America East Opponent Maine, 3-0, to Record 11th Consecutive Win

Orono, Maine ? Junior Valerie Sourbeer recorded a match-high 13 kills and also tallied four total blocks to lead UAlbany to a 3-0 sweep of America East Conference rival Maine in volleyball action on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Memorial Gymnasium. The Great Danes improved to 17-8 overall and 9-0 in conference play as they recorded their 11th straight win. UAlbany claimed the straight-set victory with scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-21.

Sophomore Brooke Stanley recorded the first two points of the match with a kill and a service ace to give UAlbany an early lead. Maine came back and built up a 10-7 advantage with a kill by Amy Lawson later in the set. The Great Danes rallied back from the deficit, as Cate Eckhardt served for three straight points, punctuated with a kill by Amanda Cowdrey to give the Great Danes a 17-14 advantage. A kill by Amanda Armstrong pulled the Black Bears within 20-18, but UAlbany's Hillary White took an assist from Kalyn Mostert and smashed a kill to set the score at 22-19. Sourbeer recorded a kill to give the Great Danes set point, and Cowdrey recorded the final point to give UAlbany the first-set win.

White and Mostert combined for a block to start the second set, and Cowdrey served for consecutive points to give the Great Danes an early 4-2 lead. After a UAlbany service error tied the set at 5-5, the Great Danes recorded back-to-back points off a Sourbeer kill and a Maine attack error. Freshman Abbey Wexel then served for eight straight points, as senior Kamisha Kellam was involved in four consecutive blocks on Maine attacks. After building up a 17-11 advantage on a White kill, Stanley took over the UAlbany service game with three straight points. Maine attempted to rally with a kill from Armstrong to pull within 22-15, but back-to-back attack errors by the Black Bears gave UAlbany the second-set victory.

Maine, which hit .065 for the match, had several attack errors to start the third set, allowing UAlbany to build up an 8-5 advantage on kills by Sourbeer and Stanley. The Great Danes continued to build their lead, getting ahead 13-9 on a kill by Cowdrey. Kellam later recorded her third solo block of the match on a Maine attack to give UAlbany a 16-12 lead. The teams exchanged points throughout the remainder of the match, with Sourbeer recording two of the Great Danes final three points, including the match-winning kill with an assist to Stanley.

White and Cowdrey both recorded eight kills and 11 digs apiece, while Stanley finished with 38 assists, five kills, three digs and a service ace. Lindsay Allman led the Great Danes with eight kills and 16 digs, while setter Jessica Wolfenden had 24 assists, nine digs and two block assists for Maine (11-12, AE 4-5).
