Flagstaff, Ariz. ? The University at Albany volleyball team opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 loss to New Mexico State on the first day of play at the Northern Arizona Tournament. The Aggies swept the Great Danes with scores of 30-27, 30-22 and 30-25.
UAlbany built up an 18-13 lead in the first game on a kill by freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey before New Mexico State scored five unanswered points to tie the score at 18-18. The teams traded points until the Aggies broke a 20-20 tie with four straight points, before going on to lead the remainder of the game.
New Mexico State took an early 6-2 lead in game two before building up a seven-point lead, 21-14, later in the game. UAlbany tried to force a fourth game by getting ahead 19-13 in game three on three service points from sophomore Kate Eckhardt. The Aggies would mount a comeback on three points of their own on Lindsey Yon's serve, building up a 24-23 lead. After Cowdrey cut the lead to three, 29-26, on a kill off an assist from sophomore Samantha Jacobson, New Mexico State's Kim Oguh took an assist form Brynja Rodgers for the match point.
UAlbany (0-1) was led by senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw and Cowdrey, who finished with seven kills apiece. Eckhardt added six kills and a team-high six kills and four total blocks. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley recorded a team-best 17 assists while also notching three service aces and five digs in her first collegiate contest.
New Mexico State (1-0) had three players in double-digit kill totals, led by Oguh, who recorded a match-high 15. Yon added 12 kills while Amber Simpson notched 10 kills for the Aggies. Krystal Torres led New Mexico State defensively, tallying 15 digs. Alyssa Gintant finished with 33 assists for the Aggies.
UAlbany will continue tournament play on Saturday, facing the host Lumberjacks at 3:30 p.m. before taking on UC Davis at 7:30 p.m.
