Fred Castro

     Fred Castro joins the UAlbany women's basketball staff after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Mercer University. He was responsible for on-floor coaching as well as game scouting, recruiting and academic progress. Castro was integral in the nation's second-best turnaround in 2008-09, leading Mercer to a 17-13 overall record. Last season, Mercer was the second seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament after landing the top recruiting class in the league. Previous to his appointment at Mercer, Castro was an advance scout for the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx and spent one season as an assistant coach for the Rogers State University men's basketball team, a NAIA program in the Sooner Athletic Conference. 
     In addition, Castro was an assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma's women's basketball program, from 2001-07, including a position as the video and travel coordinator for two seasons. While with the Sooners, Castro was part of six consecutive NCAA Tournament teams, including a Final Four squad in 2002 and back-to-back Sweet Sixteen teams. Oklahoma captured four Big 12 tournament championships and three regular-season crowns. Castro, who hails from Denton, Texas, is a graduate of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in aviation, and was an instructor in the Aviation Department in 2004-05.
