Jeremy Friel is in his seventh year as assistant men's basketball coach in 2013-14, a position he was appointed to in August 2007. He recruits in the states of New York, Texas and Arizona, plus covers parts of New England. Friel is responsible for significant recruiting efforts in Australia. The Great Danes have four Australians on the roster on 2013-14.
Friel was previously the program's director of operations for two years. In that role, he assisted the coaching staff in day-to-day operations and had duties with scouting video, practice coordination and team travel.
Friel earned his undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member of the basketball team from 2002-05. He gained a roster spot as a walk-on before receiving a full athletic scholarship in his final season. Friel appeared in 31 career games for the Wildcats. In his first career start as a senior, he scored 11 points and made three 3-point field goals against conference-rival UMBC.
Friel was a 1,000-point scorer at Oyster River High School in New Hampshire. He led the program to the Class I state semifinals as a junior and the state quarterfinals in 2001. His late father, Gerry, served as the New Hampshire men's basketball coach for 20 seasons from 1969-89.
He is married to the former Shelley Gebhardt, who was a UAlbany field hockey standout and now Union College's Senior Associate Director for Annual Giving.
