ALBANY, N.Y. – Following a visit to #1 Boston College, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse program continues its season-long four-game road swing with another trek to Massachusetts to open America East play at UMass Lowell.
Against Boston College, the top-ranked team in the country and two-time national runner-up, UAlbany (4-4) held tough through the first half, briefly holding an early, 2-1 lead before heading into halftime trailing by just three, 8-5. The Eagles top-ranked offense kicked into gear in the second half, outscoring the Danes 9-4 to claim a 17-9 victory.
Sam Tortora recorded five assists against the Eagles, helping set up four of her teammates, Hailey Carroll, Madison Conway, Hannah Newman, and Kyla Zapolski score two goals each. In net, Georgia Schneidereith recorded 12 saves on the afternoon.
The loss dropped UAlbany back to .500 on the season, after starting the year 3-0. The Eagles were the third ranked team the Great Danes have faced this season, following then-#22 Stanford and then #19 Penn State.
UMass Lowell has lost two straight, most recently at Sacred Heart last weekend, 11-8. Previously, they fell at Wagner, head coach Katie Rowan’s former team, 17-3. Saturday’s matchup will be UMass Lowell’s first at home since March 5 against Merrimack, which was the Riverhawks’ fourth home game in a row.
With their latest loss, the Great Danes remain in fourth place in the America East standings. Preseason favorite Stony Brook has retained the top spot, holding the only conference victory of the season, despite only being one game in the loss column ahead of the Great Danes. Vermont, at 5-1, and New Hampshire, at 5-3, sit between Stony Brook and UAlbany.
Following the game against UMass Lowell, the Danes’ long road trip continues with a visit to Coach Rowan’s alma-mater, Syracuse, on Wednesday, March 27.
