UAlbany Drops Match to Quinnipiac, 6-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The University at Albany women’s tennis team traveled to play Quinnipiac on Sunday. They were defeated, 6-1. Junior Rocio Lopez continued her undefeated 2013 in singles play -- she’s now 4-0. The Great Danes were without three players due to injury and had to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions.

In doubles play, the freshman duo of Mireille Hermans and Cat Crummey took home a victory at the No. 2 position. They defeated Bobcat opponents Mary Chupa and Ariana Laurie, 8-6. Lopez and senior teammate Sarah Iannone were defeated, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles spot.

Lopez was slotted in the No. 1 singles position and continued to impress. She defeated opponent Rachel Cantor, 6-4, 6-3. She continued to go unblemished in singles play for UAlbany. Hermans, who is still looking for first collegiate singles win, came close once again. She was defeated in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (3) by Sarah Viebrock.

At the No. 4 singles position Iannone was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Chupa. Crummey lost her first singles match of the season at the No. 3 position. She was defeated, 6-0, 6-1, by Michelle Dassa.

"This was a tough position for us. We were short so many players that we actually had to give away matches and have players playing much higher than usual,” said head coach Gordon Graham. “But it was a good learning experience that will make us tougher in the future.  Rocio [Lopez] continues to play her exciting all-court game”

With the loss, UAlbany dropped to 2-2 on the season. Qunnipiac moved to 2-0. The Great Danes will travel to Dartmouth, Fordham and Cornell to close out the month. They return home to play Rhode Island on March 3 at Sportime. Match time is set for 11:00 a.m.
