Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team jumped out early but could not hold off a mid-game surge from UMBC, falling 11-5 on Friday evening.
Coach Jon Mueller: "We hung around early but gave away way too much on the mound and defensively. We will get back at it tomorrow."

How it Happened:
- UAlbany struck first in the top of the second when Brian Guerrero lined a single to right field to score Jaxon Mueller and give the Great Danes an early 1-0 lead.
- UMBC responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of traffic on the bases to score twice and move ahead 2-1. The Retrievers extended their lead in the third on a solo home run to make it 3-1.
- The Great Danes cut into the deficit in the fourth. After a DeSarno single and a defensive miscue, Guerrero delivered again, driving a double down the left field line to bring home Tre Mariano and make it 3-2.
- UMBC answered in the bottom of the fourth and broke the game open in the fifth. A sacrifice fly and RBI single pushed the lead to 6-2 before a two-run home run extended it to 8-2.
- UAlbany responded with its biggest inning in the sixth. DeSarno reached and advanced on an error, setting up a run before Guerrero drove in another on a groundout. Vitucci followed with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-5 and give the Great Danes life.
- The Retrievers answered immediately, plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth and adding another in the seventh to extend the lead to 11-5.
- UAlbany was unable to generate a late rally, and UMBC secured the series-opening victory.
