Baseball Explodes for 15 Hits in Series-Clinching Win

Score: UAlbany 10, NJIT 3

Location: Yogi Berra Stadium – Newark, N.J.

Records: UAlbany (3-14, 2-1 America East) | NJIT (7-12, 1-2 America East)

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team used a balanced offensive attack and dominant bullpen effort, capped by a three-inning save from Matthew Mariano, to defeat NJIT and secure its first America East series win of the season Sunday afternoon.

Coach Jon Mueller: "Complete game offensively. We spoke about getting off to a good start and we did that. We were able to get into the bullpen on Friday and stretched them out today in the middle of the game. The arms were good today especially [Cristian] Mello, [Ethan] Nardacci and obviously when we get to Matt [Mariano] we feel pretty good."

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • UAlbany jumped on NJIT early in the first inning when Michael Maggio came around to score on an RBI groundout by Luke Filippi to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead.
  • The Great Danes added to the lead in the second as John Vitucci delivered an RBI single, extending the advantage to 2-0.
  • UAlbany broke the game open in the third inning. Logan Morris and Luke Filippi opened the frame with doubles before Cooper Loyal drove in two runs with a double to left center. With the bases loaded, Patrick DeSarno drew an RBI walk and Maggio followed with another bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 6-0.
  • NJIT responded in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-1, prompting a pitching change as Ethan Nardacci replaced Christian Mello and escaped further damage.

  • UAlbany added insurance in the sixth inning when Levi McAllister singled home Maggio to extend the lead to 7-1.
  • In the seventh, Tre Mariano launched a solo home run to left field to make it 8-1.
  • NJIT threatened in the bottom of the seventh after Ryan Pittz entered, allowing two runs before Matthew Mariano took over and limited the damage to keep the score at 8-3.

  • UAlbany capped the scoring in the ninth when Logan Morris delivered a two-run single to right center, sealing the 10-3 victory.
