Defense Shines, Men’s Lacrosse Returns to America East Title Game

Short Story:
 The No. 3 University at Albany men's lacrosse team defeated No. 2 UMBC in the America East Semifinals to advance to the conference's Championship Game by a score of 9-7. The UAlbany defense stepped up in the second half, allowing just one goal over 30+ minutes of play to end the game. Trailing for most of the contest, the Great Danes scored three goals in the final quarter to seal the win.

  • Silas Richmond led the Great Danes with three goals and two assists for five points.
  • Koleton Marquis and Ben Wimmer each finished with two goals. Wimmer scored both the game-tying goal and game-winning goal in the fourth quarter.
  • James Reid scored once and added two assists. Ryan Doherty scored once and dished out one helper.
  • Jacob Smith and Rocco Mareno each had a team-high four ground balls. Smith added two caused turnovers.

How it Happened:  
  • UMBC got an early jump with three-straight goals to start the game, but Silas Richmond answered shortly after to get the Great Danes on the board.
  • Richmond collected his second of the game shortly after to cut the lead to 3-2
  • UMBC's Corey Myers scored early in the second, but Jame Reid responded to cut the lead back to one goal, 4-3.
  • With about six minutes left in the first half, the Retrievers scored again off the stick of Jordan Galloway. Two minutes later, Josh Tang made it 6-3.
  • The Great Danes were able to score twice in the final minute to bring the score to 6-5 heading into the locker room. Reid found Koleton Marquis cutting in front of the net for the first goal before Silas Richmond scored his third of the night with two seconds remaining.
  • Ryan Doherty tied the game, 6-6, with his first of the night four minutes into the third quarter.
  • The Retrievers were next to score, but the goal didn't come until four minutes into the fourth quarter. The goal broke a drought that stretched all the way back to the second quarter for UMBC.
  • Ben Wimmer was able to tie the game with eight minutes remaining on a feed from Doherty. Two minutes later, he scored again to give the Great Danes their first lead of the night.
  • Koleton Marquis scored the final goal of the game with 3:17 remaining to seal it for UAlbany.
 
Next: With the win, the Great Danes advance to the America East Championship Game for the third consecutive year. UAlbany will face No. 1 Bryant in a rematch of the 2023 Championship Game.
