Men’s Lacrosse Closes Out Regular Season with Senior Night Against NJIT

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's lacrosse team is gearing up to host their final regular season game as the Great Danes take on the NJIT Highlanders at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.

Leading the Pack
  • Ryan Doherty continues to serve as the Great Danes' top goal scorer with 36 goals through 14 games. He is averaging 2.57 goals per game and has added 12 assists for a total of 48 points, placing him among the top offensive players in the America East.
  • Silas Richmond leads the team in total points with 65, recording 32 goals and a team-best 33 assists. He is averaging 4.64 points per game, which ranks first in the conference, and has registered at least one point in every game this season.
  • Koleton Marquis is third on the team with 20 goals and six assists. Other key scorers include Jackson Palumb with 17 goals and two assists, Daniel Kesselring with 11 goals and 10 assists, and Amos Whitcomb with 10 goals and one assist.
  • Defensively, Max Neeson has been a standout with a team-high 21 caused turnovers. He has also contributed four goals with the long pole and collected 39 ground balls, which is tied for the team lead.
  • Cade Galko shares the lead with Neeson in ground balls with 39, scoring once this season.
  • Jacob Smith is having a strong sophomore campaign, contributing three goals along with 35 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers, the second-highest total on the team.

Locked In
The Great Danes are officially locked into the 2025 America East Playoffs. UAlbany can lock up the #3 seed with a win on Saturday night, also securing the spot with a loss from Vermont. The Great Danes will drop back to the #4 seed with a loss combined with a Vermont win.
 
The top seed and championship host will either be Bryant or UMBC. Bryant takes on UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon, UMBC has finished conference play. A Bryant win over UMass Lowell will see the playoffs go to Smithfield, R.I. A Bryant loss to the River Hawks will turn hosting rights to the Retrievers in Baltimore.

Last Time Out
The University at Albany men's lacrosse team picked up a huge win over Yale at Casey Stadium on Saturday night under the lights, taking down the Bulldogs in overtime. Koleton Marquis buried the golden goal to cap the back-and-forth battle, lifting UAlbany to a thrilling 15-14 win.
  • Silas Richmond led the way for UAlbany with three goals and two assists for a team-high five points.
  • Ryan Doherty followed closely with three goals and one assist, including two scores in the fourth quarter and the game-tying assist in overtime.
  • Koleton Marquis recorded a hat trick, capped by the golden goal in overtime-his 20th of the season.

Weekly Awards
Junior attack man Silas Richmond and freshman goalkeeper Brady Smith collected weekly awards, the America East announced on Monday. Richmond was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, Smith was named the Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this year.
 
Richmond led the Great Danes in points once again last Saturday, collecting six in UAlbany's 15-14 win over non-conference rival Yale in overtime. Richmond scored twice and dished out four assists, one of which tied the game in the fourth to force overtime. The junior leads the conference with 4.64 assists per game and 2.36 assists per game.
 
Smith stepped up in the closing moments of Saturday's overtime win. The freshman made two huge saves in the final four minutes of action to keep the game tied at 14-14. In overtime, Smith made another huge stop to give the ball back to the UAlbany offense, who scored the game-winning goal in the ensuing transition. In total, Smith made 10 big saves in 62 minutes of action.

The regular season wraps up on Saturday with three conference matchups to finalize the America East standings heading into the tournament.

History with NJIT
UAlbany has dominated the series against NJIT, who joined the America East in 2021. The Great Danes have won all four matchups, holding a perfect 4-0 record against the Highlanders. UAlbany's largest margin of victory came in their inaugural meeting, a 16-5 win in 2021. Their most recent contest was on April 15, 2023, when the Danes earned a 12-8 road victory in Newark. Across the four matchups, UAlbany has outscored NJIT by a combined margin of 58-26, consistently showcasing offensive depth and defensive stability.
 
Scouting the Highlanders
NJIT enters Saturday's matchup with a 1-10 overall record and a 0-5 mark in America East play. The Highlanders picked up their lone win of the season at home against Wagner on March 8, earning a narrow 12-11 victory.

  • Michael Vanzomeren has taken the majority of faceoffs this season, winning 98 of 194 attempts for a .505 win percentage. He is backed up by Michael Gaffney, who has gone 25-for-47 (.532), and Nirio Garcia, who is 11-for-29 (.379).
  • In goal, Joey Schwarz has logged the most minutes, posting a 14.24 goals-against average and a .457 save percentage across eight appearances.
 
Next: UAlbany will enter the America East Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Great Danes' opponent is still to be determined with the final America East games scheduled for Saturday. The Purple and Gold will visit the #2 seed on Thursday, May 1, for the America East Men's Lacrosse Semifinals.
