Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball program fell to Vermont in a 79-71 finish for the final game of the regular season.
Coach Dwayne Killings: "We had, I think, a strong finish to our regular season and now our focus is about beating Binghamton and hosting a home game for the first time in almost a decade. This is a great moment for our program, but we can't screw it up and we've got to be locked into the details and what it takes to win."
Key Stats:
- Byron Joshua led UAlbany with 25 points shooting 8-19 (42.5%) from the field and 3-5 (60.0%) from three-point range and 6-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line in 40 minutes of work.
- Kacper Klaczek tallied a team-high seven rebounds while shooting 4-8 (50.0%) from the field.
- Amar'e Marshall and Amir Lindsey led the Great Danes with three assists each.
- UAlbany shot 25-61 (41.0%) from the field, 9-20 (45.0%) from beyond the arc, and 12-15 (80.0%) from the free throw line
How it Happened:
- Vermont managed to score the opening basket of the game while the Great Danes immediately answered back where in the first six minutes of the game the Catamounts led by one, 9-8.
- With 10:50 left on the clock, a three from Amir Lindsey pushed the Purple and Gold ahead 15-13.
- A 7-2 run by Vermont over the next four minutes would put UAlbany at a three-point deficit, 20-17.
- Following a three from Amar'e Marshall to tie it 20-20, UAlbany outscored the Catamounts 9-5 over the next four minutes to lead 29-25 with 1:37 to play.
- Vermont closed out the first half with a five-point run to take the 30-29 lead entering the half.
- Vermont outscored the Great Danes in the first three minutes of the second half 9-7 to lead 39-26,
- An 11-7 run by UAlbany, capitalized by a dunk from Kacper Klaczek, allowed the Purple and Gold to take a 47-46 lead with 13:03 to play.
- Both teams would find themselves tied twice at 47-47 and 50-50 before a UVM 6-3 run pushed the Catamounts ahead 56-53 with 10 minutes to play.
- A jumper from Byron Joshua and two free throws from Marshall put UAlbany back ahead 57-56 with 9:21 remaining.
- Vermont would go on to outscore the Great Danes 13-4 over the next three minutes to jump out to a 69-61 lead.
- In the closing three minutes of play both teams would score 10 points, giving Vermont the 79-71 victory.
